BOX11: it’s about art, not cardboard

BOX Stage 1 Jury 140

The BOXware campaign is going well… maybe a little too well.

At a party Saturday night, Mr. B’s line of questioning clued me in that I may have taken the whole box-cardboard-schwag thing a little too far.  “So… it’s a show of cardboard art, right?”  Aie!  No.  This was corroborated at lunch today by DFT (who can optimize your compiler—in his head!) when he said “Your blog… I just don’t get it.”

So with thanks to my honest friends, and in the spirit of “there’s no bad publicity”, let me say:

BOX11 is about art: painting, photos, sculpture, prints, you-get-the-idea (see above)

BOX11 is NOT about boxes/cardboard in any way other than it had its origins in a former industrial setting where at some point boxes were made.  That’s it.  No cardboard in the show.  Fortunately, there are only 6 people in the world that read my blog, so I haven’t misled a lot of people.

Come out to the BOX11 Art Show & Sale on Nov 12/13.  Talk to cool artists.  Buy some art.  Forget the cardboard.

An idea: BOXware Door Sign

Waterloo Regional Chair and Chief Administrative Officer

Dear Cathy Farwell (BOX Art organizer extraordinaire),

After prototyping the BOXware PlayBook Stand to promote the amazing BOX 11 Art Show & Sale (coming Nov 12-13 – only 3 weeks away!), I got thinking about schwag for the office.  Of course!  A Door Sign!

A quick spin back to the drawing board and hot off the laser cutter came this sharp-looking sign to hang from any office door handle.  Helping out this time with the test-drive is Waterloo Regional Chair, Mr. Ken Seiling and Waterloo Region’s Chief Administrative Officer, Mr. Mike Murray (above).

As you know, the Region of Waterloo owns the awesome Rumpel Felt property at Victoria and Duke Streets where BOX11 is happening this year.  Great to have them on board as one of the BOX11 sponsors!  The talk on Nov 12 “Exploring Historical Roots of Creativity” with Prof. Geoffrey Hayes of UW’s History Dept. sounds really cool.  Will be interesting to learn more on some of the historical connections with the Rumpel Felt Factory.

Now, let’s see this Door Sign…

An idea: BOXware PlayBook Stand

BOXware PlayBook Stand - CuteGecko 026

Dear Cathy Farwell (BOX Art organizer extraordinaire),

After prototyping the BOXware Doghouse, Earrings, and Hat to promote the amazing BOX 11 Art Show & Sale (coming Nov 12-13 – only 4 weeks away!), I got thinking about schwag for the digital natives.  Of course!  PlayBook Stand!

So I went back to the lab and designed and built this baby.  Who better to test-drive it than my good friends Amy Vandenberg and Karl Allen-Muncey of CuteGecko Graphic Design Agency  They used their PlayBook to work from the road on their cross-Canada trip last summer.  Right on!

As you know, CuteGecko is a BOX11 sponsor: Amy and Karl are using their unique fusion of design and tech know-how to build a completely new BOX website.  Stay tuned for that launch.  I can hardly wait!

Never grew up: love the parade!

Oktoberfest Parade 2011 492

Oktoberfest parade down King St. in Waterloo Region is a happy ritual.  For front row seats you need to roll out at 07:15 for the 08:30 start.  The temperature is a roll of the dice: shirt sleeves one year and three scarves the next.  But it’s a helluva great show and a great communal meet-up.

Lots o’ pics follow. (JB, all the tight shots done with the 70-200mm, all wide with the 18-105mm kit, since you were askin’)

David G. White–the new work coming to BOX11

Print

My brother from the very same mother, Dave White, and I laid out this postcard for printing in preparation for the upcoming and awesome BOX11 Art Show & Sale.  Features one of Dave’s new kick-ass oil paintings, “Verge”, that can be seen and purchased at the show, only 6 weeks from now.  You really can’t get the full impact from this tiny image: the painting is huge-mongous.  Guaranteed to blow your hair back.

Dave will be bringing two other pieces in this “dreamscape” series to BOX, but you’ll have to show up on Nov 12 and 13 to see ‘em.  No more spoilers here, yo.

Buy this art.

Happy making,

DW

An idea: BOXware Earrings

BOXware Earrings - Cathy Brothers 009

Dear Cathy Farwell (BOX Art organizer extraordinaire),

After prototyping the BOXware Doghouse that Hilary Abel and Martha helped me debut last week to promote the amazing BOX 11 Art Show & Sale (coming Nov 12-13), I got thinking about what you said about accessories for a night on the town.  Of course!  Earrings!

So I went back to the lab, designed these stunning BOXware Earrings, and enlisted BOX’s very good friend, Cathy Brothers (above) of Capacity Waterloo Region, to model them.  As you know, Cathy is the Executive Director in Residence for Capacity Waterloo Region, and was the super-duper guest curator for BOX10 last year.

It was a treat…

An idea: BOXware Doghouse

BOXware Hilary and Martha 061

Dear Cathy Farwell (BOX Art organizer extraordinaire),

After prototyping the BOXware Hat that Jim Erb modelled to promote the amazing BOX 11 Art Show & Sale (coming Nov 12-13), I got thinking about what you said about pet lovers and their pets.  They need BOX11 schwag, too!

So I went back to the lab, designed this handsome BOXware Doghouse facade, and enlisted my very good friends Hilary Abel and Martha (above) to test drive it.  You probably know Hilary from the ever-rockin’ RQ Magazine, the hot-wired-nexus-of-all-good-cultural-info blog that gets us all off our sofas and out into the community.

Martha was…

Perimeter Institute–Stephen Hawking Centre opens… Wow!

Perimeter Institute Open Doors 023

Let me start off by saying simply this: holy macaroni!

Last Sunday was my first-ever visit to Waterloo’s own Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics with the double-plus bonus of touring the newly-opened Stephen Hawking Centre, an unbelievable expansion to an already amazing facility.  Ok, that’s a lot of superlatives, but really… wow.

Picture walk with me…
