Contemporary Arts Forum Kitchener + Area is on now. Check it out and stretch your mind. Brother Dave (his pic above despite the watermark) and I were wandering the core on Saturday…
Dear Cathy Farwell (BOX Art organizer extraordinaire),
I was thinking about ways to promote the upcoming and fabulous BOX11 Art Show & Sale, and reflected on all the conferences, trade shows, and meet-ups that I attend in my other life. They all feature a metric tonne of promotional items we commonly call schwag. BOX11 could have schwag too! And what more fitting construction material to use for BOX promos than good old corrugated cardboard? We’ll call it… BOXware.
The first thing I thought of was a cardboard hat! Perfect! Light weight, recyclable, stylish. Many thanks to Jim Erb (above), guest curator for BOX11, for modelling the prototype BOXware Hat. As you know, BOX11’s Charity Partner is the Kitchener Conestoga Rotary Club Turkey Drive for House of Friendship Christmas Hamper Project, which Jim chairs, so I really appreciated him dropping by to test drive the Hat.
Now, before we make thousands of these Hats…
Friday night was the drop off date for artists to submit their work to the BOX11 Art Show & Sale jury (you’re saving the Nov 12/13 dates to visit the show, right?). It was a really cool opportunity for me to get a behind-the-scenes glimpse into BOX, having enjoyed it only as a spectator the past two years.
Before the…
The BOX 11 Art Show & Sale is only 9 weeks away. You may remember last year’s BOX 10 was held in the Breithaupt Block. Cool art + cool industrial venue = awesome event. This year, BOX 11 has moved around the corner to the Rumpel Felt building at Victoria and Duke, now owned by The Region of Waterloo. I was lucky enough to get an opportunity to do a little solo (and authorized) urban exploration of this great venue. Let me show you some interesting corners I found, but first, two things:
1. On your calendar, save the dates of Nov 12 and 13 so you can get down here and see/buy some great art.
2. You’re a local artist? Great! Submit your work to the BOX 11 jury this Friday, Sept 9.
Ok, on to the pics. BTW, this loop of old valve handles (above) really blew my hair back.
When you think about building the city you want to live in it helps a lot if you leave it once in a while for other cities. Provides perspective and new ideas. San Francisco is one of my faves. Trip #5 to SF last week.
It turns out I love jazz. Sure, I’ve picked up Billie Holiday, Chet Baker, and Miles Davis and loved their catalogues, but there’s *nothing* like sitting 10 feet from a trio of crazy-talented musicians in a joint as cool as The Jazz Room.
After connecting with Stephen Preece and other peeps in the Grand River Jazz Society earlier this year, I started a happy journey following their progress as they did the very hard thing of creating a not-for-profit that brings massive value to the community. Well, tonight, they’ve come a long way from setting the stage and re-animating the piano. The limited-audience sneak peek Thursday night offered a promising glimpse of what is bound to be one of Waterloo’s new hot spots.
The first thing you should know is…
I had another great opportunity to shoot in a former industrial site this weekend. Thanks to my friend, Cathy Farwell, and her connection to Shawky Fahel, 11 of us were able to roam the former American Standard plant in Hespeler for three hours Saturday morning. This plant used to make bath tubs, but that work has since moved off shore. The site is slated for refurb into condominiums by Shawky’s company. Tons of great subject matter here.
Thanks to Cathy and Roger for making sure we all got out ok, and thanks to Shawky for the site access.
Picking up my focus on “wall writing” from the RMS shoot back in March, I set out with more gear this time (a tripod is a must-have). This toy horse in a trash barrel on the loading dock really blew my hair back. Surreal.
