The BOX11 prep fever ratcheted up this week in the homestretch leading up to the Nov 12/13 art show at the Rumpel Felt factory. A small army of volunteers have been working long hours to bring you this super-cool show this weekend. Don’t miss it.
With the help of 16 local artists last weekend, I made this piece called
I’m fortunate to be friends with a fair number of artists in the region. I get to visit their studios, collaborate on projects with them, and learn from them. I’m as interested in the making as I am in the output, so I think a lot about the human element in the creative ecosystem. It’s a richer experience when you think about the artist, guttin’ it out, scrapin’ together ideas and time and materials and putting something out there.
But don’t take my word for it: come out to the BOX11 Art Show & Sale this weekend and meet some of the people on the other end of these hands.

Dear Cathy Farwell (BOX Art organizer extraordinaire),
I know the fantastic BOX11 Art Show & Sale is only 6 days away (!), but I couldn’t resist prototyping one more piece of BOXware. Drink Coasters! My pal, Jacqui Murphy (above), of the fabulous Art Allies, helped me test drive the coasters at lunch on Friday at one of my favourite joints, The Bauer Kitchen. So cool that selected BOX artists are offered a one year non-exclusive contract with Art Allies and their mission to connect local creators of art with local collectors of art.
Earlier in October, the big banner for the BOX11 Art Show & Sale was installed on the Rumpel Felt building, fronting on to Victoria Street. It looks awesome! Less than 2 weeks to go now. Nov 12/13.

On Saturday, Waterloo Region’s super-duper makerspace, kwartzlab, set up shop at THEMUSEUM to engage the community in an awesome event that involved building electronic candles and carving cool pumpkins. Dubbed “Hacky Halloween”, this KW Awesome Foundation-funded event really highlighted kwartzlab’s mission of enabling the maker in all of us regardless of skillset/age/gender/whatever. The event also serves as a powerful example of putting together something uniquely cool with a minimum of overhead when community partners come together in the spirit of the do-ocracy. Git ‘er done!
So, yesterday was Christmas and New Year’s Eve: I got a painting from my very good and wickedly talented friend, Mr. James Nye! Now hanging chez DW (above)
Y’know… I just like Ignite Waterloo a lot. I like the energy of the people organizing/speaking/attending.
