At the back door to Kitchener City Hall. Many feet make light work.
KCI kicks it After Hours
(wish I knew who did this print, but there were no names or prices. Mash-up of textures with stylized photos)
My travels took me to Kitchener-Waterloo Collegiate and Vocational School (more commonly known as KCI) on Wednesday night. Yes, I went back to high school. Bought student work, chatted with makers. Very cool.

Double R Steel tour
Inch-thick steel is almost sculptural. Such were the awesome stacks of it at Double R Steel in Kitchener. Last weekend, during the BOX Art Show & Sale, I had the good fortune to tour through Double R Steel’s heavy shop that adjoins the venue used for BOX on Ardelt Place.

1shot #152-van Gogh redux
At the Nova Scotia border, I made a van Gogh connection.
1shot #151-escape from nowhere
On Weber St N, behind Jack’s. Sometimes the story is so obvious and the urge to capture it irresistable.

BOX the work

Ok, so one last time: BOX Art Show & Sale is on this weekend Nov 16/17. Get there!
I dropped by the venue today. Lights are up and working. Work is lit. This is a show ready to go. And here’s the deal: I’m not shooting the actual show this year, just enjoying it. If you want to see this great work and more in its uncropped glory, you’ll have to make your way down to Ardelt Place this weekend. Be sure to bring some sort of payment mechanism so you can take some work home. And please say hello to me if you’ve enjoyed the posts and pics on BOX. I’m the tall, bearded guy without a camera.
Happy BOXing,
DW
KW Awesome Foundation supports Brian Douglas’ 5am Project
This brown paper bag has a thousand bucks in it. The cash comes from the pockets of citizen trustees looking to make stuff happen in their community with the lowest conceivable overhead.
The hand belongs to my friend Brian Douglas, social worker by day and hard working photog every other waking hour around the clock, apparently. He gave a 5-minute pitch for his 5AM project, where he goes out in the community and photographs and captures the stories of night workers. The trustees liked what they heard and awarded this round’s cash to Brian. That’s Brian, whose photos are in the—you guessed it!—BOX Art Show & Sale this weekend Nov 16/17.
That’s the KW Awesome Foundation at work.
Light BOX
Yup, we’re going to talk about the BOX Art Show all week, because it’s coming this Sat/Sun Nov 16/17. I stopped by the venue yesterday for a behind-the-scenes look at the lighting rig setup. Allan and Alex Hoch and their crew have lit the BOX show since it moved out of the hallway in 2010, and they do a helluva good job.
Get to this show!
Click through for a semi-unreasonable number of photos of pre-show setup. It was a delightful confluence of art, tech, and interesting visuals for me to shoot…
Building the BOX
The BOX Art Show & Sale 2013 is coming this weekend, Nov 16/17. Get there!
I checked in on the BOX crew to preview the venue and see how things are shaping up. Spent an hour shooting *outside* before I even got in the door. Going to be a great show…
