Crushed

Pam's boots

Tonight, Twitter told me my friend Pam Salisbury has passed away.  I last saw Pam at her store, Flourish Florals, in DTK back in June when I shot the first King Street Art Market.  We first met at cinq à sept at The Bauer Kitchen and after that I saw and chatted with Pam at all sorts of community events.  I always loved Pam’s cool boots, which were funky and unique like her.

So long, Pam.

Looking through

Bad weather really does make for some interesting photos.  The freezing rain here in Waterloo today made a quarter-inch crust of textured ice on top of the snow.  Carefully lifting a slab of that and pouring some warm water across it to clear it up made an interesting real-life Photoshop filter that I captured with my BlackBerry Z30 (well, Adub actually shot this one of me in the middle).  Seems like we are emerging from water.

Shinny

Uptown Waterloo 014-2

After having a beer with Thad at Ethel’s on Tuesday night, he went back to work and I went looking for a shoot.  I intended to camp out and wait for something interesting to go by, but there was no wait at all when I rolled into Waterloo Public Square uptown.  There was a massive game of shinny in progress.

BOX Finale

BOX Finale 026

We hung up the apron on the BOX Art Show & Sale tonight with a great party at Cathy Farwell’s studio in Kitchener.  It was a great run of five years, and I’m extremely grateful for the friends I’ve made working with BOX.  BOX demonstrated a model of getting artists fairly paid and getting work out of the galleries and to the people.  I eagerly look forward to all the new post-BOX beginnings.

Thanks Cathy and team for the opportunity to pitch in on such a unique and important element of our creative ecosystem.

Talking new audio with Bob Egan and David Gray

Bob Egan and David Gray - Modern Audio Arts - Conestoga College-3

A funny thing happened on the way to this blog post: I was googling for some background info to support my Saturday interviews with Bob Egan and David Gray of Conestoga College’s Modern Audio Arts program, and found *the* post on this topic by my good friend and awesome writer Tony Reinhart.  Not even a week old.

What to do?  First: you should go read Tony’s post.  Second: click through for my usual gritty and guerrilla look at MAA’s Saturday open house at the Kitchener Studio Project.

In brief:
* if you’re making mobile apps, games, music, or video, you should definitely check this program out.  Bob and David are a heavy fusion of industry and academic cred combined with a forward-looking vision of how to teach audio capture/creation/delivery.  They’re also super-chilled out.
* go to the next open house (Tue Dec 3 6pm-9pm – 44 Gaukel – aka the old post office)
* sign up!  They’re rolling when they get 15 students for January.  The first three courses will run Mon-Wed 6pm-9pm.  Every in-class hour will likely require an out-of-class hour.  Here’s a relevant shortcut to the Conestoga catalogue.  Each course appears to be $315 and I believe there’s no obligation to take all three.  The catalogue says Doon campus, but I’m sure it’s actually going to be at KSP on Gaukel, which doesn’t yet show up in Conestoga’s list of campuses.

Ok, so (a medium-unreasonable number of) pics…
