Centre in the Square opens with killer BANDALOOP show

CITS 2013 opening 212-2

Centre in the Square kicked off the 2013-2014 season Friday night with a great free event.  Despite the 9C temperature, WR came out for the food trucks, the live music, and the awesome aerial dance show from BANDALOOP.  If you missed the fun Friday, you can catch more of this goodness on Saturday as the party continues.

Big thanks to all the peeps who made this possible.  Looking forward to seeing Martin Short here next week.  Now, click through for an unreasonable number of pics from Friday…

Jared Davison photos at The Rotunda

Jared Davison at The Rotunda 033

My friend and fellow photog, Jared Davison, opened his show “Tomorrow Disappears: Vanishing Industry in Ontario” on Thursday night at The Rotunda Gallery at Kitchener City Hall.  Runs until the end of September, I believe.  Deets on fb.  Get over there and check it out.

St. Jacobs Farmers Market after the fire

St Jacobs Farmers Market - post fire Thursday 031

Happily, the outdoor part of the market was still operating this morning.  With all the well wishes and promises of support online, I was curious if people would haul ass up to the market before work and spend some money.  And I’m always curious to see real media folks do what they do.  I was also looking for some peaches.  I was not disappointed on any front.

1shot #142-we rode hard for the boat

IMG_00001231

Missed the ferry back to Nova Scotia, so we chilled at the dock at Wood Islands, PEI.  Love watching for these shots in the mirrors.  The tint on the mirror gives a surreal filter-like effect.  Captured this with my Z10.

Lines of cars make me think a lot about the modern condition.  Happily, this girl has escaped.

Trying out some cross-posting to Tumblr.  If that’s your thing, you can follow me at darinwhite.tumblr.com

St. Jacob’s Farmers Market on fire

St Jacobs Farmers Market Fire 063

Saw a photo posted to reddit by Brandon Lieng of the market on fire and trucked over there with my gear.  Tough to get near the fire with many of the roads blocked off.  Shot this from the roadside on King St N above Lobsinger Line.  The uprights you see between the trees is apparently all that’s left of the main building.  A bystander who lives beside the gas station at Wagner’s Corner told me the flames were visible above the trees a short while before I got there.  My friend Tony Reinhart retweeted the fire page received at 01:48:36 so I was a couple of hours behind the fire crews.

Hope all are safe and my heart goes out to Brady’s Meat & Deli, Stonecrock Bakery, and all the other vendors at the market.  Click through for a few more pics…

1shot #141-a nod to Colville

IMG_00001141

The Northumberland Strait near Pictou, Nova Scotia.  Calder loved these binoculars and looked through them each day.  As I waited, soaking up the sun and sky and sea, I noticed he was all in red, looking like a picture with all that blue.  Like a painting that Alex Colville might have done.

1shot #140-context of destruction

IMG_00001053

This is Waterloo, Phillip St.

On a lunchtime walk up Phillip, it struck me that this scene of careful deconstruction and reclamation of materials of the student housing co-op was in stark contrast to the context of rubble in other parts of the world.  Both in the slow and deliberate pace of the change and in what it represents in our community.  Here in Waterloo, no one thinks, “Ah, results of the latest drone strike”.  Instead, they perhaps think, “What shiny new building will replace the perfectly functional one that was there before?”

clouds 073

The Tannery smokestack was cranking out clouds, or so it appeared, on my lunchtime photo walk on Friday.  The clouds have been amazing this week, and to shoot them effectively I wanted to include some underexposed architectural elements to experiment with framing (though not in the usual sense) and juxtaposition (and I rarely use that word) of rectilinear and ephemeral stuff.  I achieved equal measures of strange looks and good questions as I shot photos straight up at the sky between Benton and Victoria in 33C heat.
