Geek Week is an umbrella under which a whack of upcoming events cooperate to encourage you to leave your sofas and hit the streets. Maker Expo (coming Sept 10), upon which I work, is always looking to partner and connect and cross-promote with other things happening in Waterloo Region. To that end, we’re happy to be in the Geek Week mix, figuring it all out as we go along.
Last week my friend and fellow geek-weeker Sam Trieu and I joined Amaris Gerson and Stephen Campbell on their weekly jam: The Tech Startup Podcast, now 104 iterations in.
The TL;DR: listen here.
Happily, this segment was recorded just downstairs from my co-working desk in Distillery Labs uptown. And y’all know I can’t resist getting a little meta, even first thing in the morning, so here are a few behind-the-scenes shots of TSP. Above, there’s Brandon Hardy (right) and Dave Hiff (second from right) of Oak & Rumble Media setting up.
Gear. Box.

Dave, with the light pouring in.
Brandon setting up the mics. These guys turned out great production quality.
Wait! What’s this? Maker Expo promo kit? Only 2.5 weeks away. Free-no-pay. (rhyme!)
Gel.
Amaris, ready for her close-up. One of Amaris’ other projects is HackerNest KW, which I covered here back in March. You should check out those monthly meetups.
That painting in the background is by my brother-from-the-very-same-mother David G. White.
That’s a serious video head on that tripod.
Stephen, who I expected to break into a Willie Nelson tune at any moment. He’s with Igloo [correction!] Grobo downtown. You can learn more about the hosts in TSP #100, which they described as “meta and narcissistic”.
I need XLR cables this long.
Everything was good as I stood on a chair to get this overhead shot, and then my camera bag got about 3 pounds lighter as my 70-200mm f2.8 lens slid out and hit the floor.
This is the first pic I took with that lens to test it. Thanks to Dave for the fellow-photographer, supportive look and pause. I started to see in colour again once I knew autofocus and zoom were working, and then it was time for the show. (Epilog: a trip up to BJ Photo later in the morning resulted in Abdul checking the lens and declaring “It’s fine.” New lens hood ordered.)
Then we talked.
And Brandon and Dave recorded.
Nice talking with you Stephen and Amaris.
Sam was already putting the word out. Lots of stuff coming up in September, starting with Maker Expo on the 10th. Then HackerNest. Then Hack The North and Doors Open Waterloo Region. There’s a Nerd Nite KW in there somewhere. And lots more.
You know what to do.
At King and Allen, this is Waterloo. (rhyme! again.)
