I have always loved “The Family” by Hamilton sculptor William McElcheran. I used to wait for the bus to school by it when I lived in downtown Guelph. Yesterday, Brohemus and I headed over to Wyndham Art Supplies, the best damned store around for supplies (high-five Chris and staff!) While shooting downtown, I was thinking about how the composition of a photo can totally bend the perception of the broader context. If you’ve seen this statue, you know I’ve taken a liberty here.

When I was young, my grandfather suggested that the matter in the leg of his lawn chair was made up of atoms, which was to say, some stuff plus a lot of empty space. He went on to wonder if, given the stars and planets and great distances in between, we perhaps were in the leg of some much greater chair. That was the first time I thought about context, though I didn’t have a name for it then. I think about that now when I shoot macro photos and see new things for having looked.

Brother Dave shot Biotron here with his iPhone 4 and the old taped on plastic lens. Actually all that’s left of Biotron from 1976 is his head and one claw hand. When this steely robot man was new, Trudeau was in office, the CN Tower opened, and we did not yet know of Star Wars.

Mr. James Nye, rockin the Kitchener City Hall Rotunda through the end of March. This series traces James’ bicycle trip the 1500km along the Danube River. He takes double exposures on film, overlaying landscapes with graffiti from the same damned place! As if that isn’t enough, he uses those captures as source material for his oil paintings. Get over to City Hall and see this work. James is the real deal.

I broke a big bar magnet, knocking it off Dave’s fridge. Taped my macro lens on the Z10, lit it with a pen light, and landscapes emerged.
