Pascal Dufaux talks video-art at kwartzlab

Pascal Dufaux talk 127

Montreal-based artist Pascal Dufaux (right) blew my hair back Tuesday night with a great talk on his work involving image and video making with special rigs he constructs.  I could do a rambling job of trying to describe his work, but far better that you watch this short 2-minute video of his piece “Around You”.  This whole domain of study plugged directly into my interests as a photographer and a maker.

Pascal is the new CHRISTIE-CAFKA artist-in-residence, landing him here in Kitchener January 4 and he’s already well into the work.  Happily for all involved, he is spending some of his time at the ever-awesome kwartzlab, building a new piece, meeting makerly friends, and this week giving us a great overview of his work.

Somewhat fortuitously, I ran into Karl Williams grabbing a sandwich at Vincenzo’s at lunch Tuesday and he mentioned this cool artist talk coming the very same night at kwartzlab’s Tuesday Open Night.  Having not been down to the lab since the soldering marathon working on Natalie’s Tamagotchi Eggshell hacking boards, I jumped on the opportunity.

(Faithful readers, please tell me who created this awesome metal elephant at the lab)

This body of Machine #4 was 3D printed and later cast in bronze at a foundry, giving this great organic shape.

We had a lot of questions, which required a lot of answers.

Gordon’s camera.  Huge fan.  There’s a pun there somewhere.

Yes, this is a redundant shot, but long-time friends know of my fascination with eye-like objects.

The notes of kwartzlab are delightful in the sense that there is a place in town where such notes are necessary.

After the talk, we went… no not dress shopping, though this window on Queen was hard to miss.
