Centre in the Square opens with killer BANDALOOP show

CITS 2013 opening 212-2

Centre in the Square kicked off the 2013-2014 season Friday night with a great free event.  Despite the 9C temperature, WR came out for the food trucks, the live music, and the awesome aerial dance show from BANDALOOP.  If you missed the fun Friday, you can catch more of this goodness on Saturday as the party continues.

Big thanks to all the peeps who made this possible.  Looking forward to seeing Martin Short here next week.  Now, click through for an unreasonable number of pics from Friday…

Construction season wraps up soon, leading to the other Canadian season.  Would love to know the story that necessitated this sign, but regardless: the FLAGMAN has spoken.

CITS 2013 opening 012

Ah, food trucks and lineups…

CITS 2013 opening 014

CDub did some serious climbing at the rock wall.

CITS 2013 opening 022

Show is here.

CITS 2013 opening 023

Mission Control.

CITS 2013 opening 027

Hey, Deb Currie, Director of Engagement & Special Projects here at the Centre.  Deb loves it when I take her photo.

CITS 2013 opening 029

You’d think we were all bundled for the Oktoberfest Parade, but it’s still only September.

CITS 2013 opening 035

Hello, Paul Roorda, artist and teacher extraordinaire.  Good turnout.

CITS 2013 opening 037

CITS 2013 opening 039

Lots of cameras at this gig.

CITS 2013 opening 040

Brock Hart from Overlap and Centre CEO Sandra Bender kick it off.

CITS 2013 opening 045

Over the edge…

CITS 2013 opening 054

and dancing.

CITS 2013 opening 065

These performers make it look easy.

CITS 2013 opening 070

Some cool physics at work here.

CITS 2013 opening 074

I’ll be the first to admit: I went berserk and snapped a lot of frames on this shoot.

CITS 2013 opening 090

I found this visually very compelling as well as being a helluva great show in general.

CITS 2013 opening 096

Nice and evenly lit overcast sky is happily blown out for exposure.

CITS 2013 opening 106

Was shooting the 70-200mm f2.8 exclusively.

CITS 2013 opening 112

Exposure was a bit tricky as I had light from the overcast 6:30pm sky and spot lights shooting up, so different colour temps.  I wanted a reasonable fast exposure to freeze the action, flowing clothes, and hair, so I shot ISO 3200 mostly.  Shot the aerial stuff at f8 to be reasonably sure that the multiple performers would all be in focus. CITS 2013 opening 118

[crowd holds breath]

CITS 2013 opening 129

Loss of separation is something to avoid.

CITS 2013 opening 133

CITS 2013 opening 139

Loved the facial expressions here.

CITS 2013 opening 140

Going for a diagonal here.

CITS 2013 opening 149

I was very interested in the juxtaposition (and I rarely use that word) of brick and sky.

CITS 2013 opening 156

Descending.

CITS 2013 opening 159

CITS 2013 opening 169

This was an amazing move.

CITS 2013 opening 188

Lots of negative space.

CITS 2013 opening 199

CITS 2013 opening 215

The tutu came up great here.

CITS 2013 opening 229

I was looking to get more sky behind the performers so I was running around the other side of the tower, tromping through the gardens.  Tried to use the two different parts of the building as framing elements.

CITS 2013 opening 237

I liked the sprawl and disembodied arm so much…

CITS 2013 opening 252

that I shot it…

CITS 2013 opening 252-2

three times.

CITS 2013 opening 261

Working.

CITS 2013 opening 267

Shooting through the trees, obviously, and came up with something reminiscent of the Mad Men opener.

CITS 2013 opening 272

Love the contrast of the lines against the sky.

CITS 2013 opening 274

CITS 2013 opening 285

Leap.

CITS 2013 opening 279

Yeah, cranked this composition 90 degrees and went to black and white because it was tonally pretty strong.

CITS 2013 opening 295

This guy’s job is to worry about *everything*.

CITS 2013 opening 301

Where did all these awesome Adirondack chairs come from?  There were dozens of them.  Fantastic.

CITS 2013 opening 302

Round and round she goes…

CITS 2013 opening 304

Cool dog.

CITS 2013 opening 312

Good way to get there.

CITS 2013 opening 318

Jeremy Fisher put on an awesome show.  Super talented and super chilled.

CITS 2013 opening 320

Local cable on scene.  Serious gear.

CITS 2013 opening 327

Hey, musician Frank Chen

CITS 2013 opening 332

and Brock talking Frank’s brother Sunshine Chen.

CITS 2013 opening 336

Sandra spreading the Centre word in an on the spot interview with Natasha McKenty, host of Grand River Living on Rogers TV.

CITS 2013 opening 337

Wheels.

CITS 2013 opening 355

Amazing sky.  Alright, so get down to the party on Saturday and check out BANDALOOP and the music for yourself.  Deets at the Centre in the Square website.

Peace,
DW
